What is a draughtsman chair?
A draughtsman chair is simply a tall, height-adjustable chair that is designed to allow users to work comfortably at elevated working surfaces (for example, lab benches, drawing boards etc).
Drafting stools (as they are also known), include foot rings which provide leg and foot support.
Draughtsman chairs also feature a high-degree of adjustability, including height-adjustability, ergonomic adjustability and more.
What height range do I need on a draughtsman chair?
For the majority of benches, drawing boards, and other elevated working surfaces, a draughtsman chair with an adjustable height range of between 560 and 830 mm will be suitable.
When sitting on the chair at your elevated working surface, you should be able to rest your arms at 90 degrees on the table-top.
Glides or castors: what is best?
The majority of draughtsman chairs are available with a choice of either slides or castor wheels. Each has its pros and cons:
- Glides: these are fixed feet that offer maximum stability, but require the chair to be picked up if you need to move it.
- Castors: lockable castor wheels brake when you sit down, stabilising the chair. However, they can be unlocked, so the chair can be free rolled when it needs to be moved.
What’s the difference between a draughtsman chair and a high stool?
Draughtsmans chairs are different from high stool chairs due to their level of adjustability and ergonomic features.
Whereas high stools are fixed, draughtsman chairs can be adjusted for height. Furthermore, the majority of models can be adjusted on an ergonomic basis e.g. the seat back can be raised or lowered. Others feature adjustable armrests.
Is it possible to buy ESD versions of draughtsman chairs?
Yes. Given that draughtsman chairs are often used in laboratories and other areas where it is imperative that static electricity does not build up, many models are classed as ‘ESD-safe’.
This means that the chair has been designed with dissipative materials that create a safe electrical path to the ground. This prevents the build up of static electricity that could damage fragile equipment.
What safety standards should I look for in draughtsman chairs?
The main safety and testing standards you should look for in draughtsman chairs are as follows:
- BS 5459-2 (Specification for performance requirements and tests for office furniture).
- EN 16955: 2017.
- EN 12529 and EN 12528.
- BS 7176: 2007.
