What is a bariatric chair?
Bariatric chairs are chairs that have been designed and manufactured to support people of heavier than average weight.
Depending on the manufacturer’s specifications, bariatric chairs can support users who weigh 30 stone (200kg) or more. In terms of an upper weight limit, bariatric chairs tend to have an upper capacity of about 50 stone (317.5kg).
As you’ll see on this page, bariatric chairs encompass many different types of chair – from armchairs to task chairs. They are simply chairs that have a more robust construction than standard chairs.
How do I choose a bariatric chair?
Aside from checking the weight capacity of the chair, it also pays to consider other factors such as: seat width, seat depth, armrest clearance, and backrest height. These factors will all influence how comfortable your chosen chair will be.

Do you sell bariatric chairs for healthcare environments?
Yes, absolutely. Many of our bariatric chairs are designed to be used in healthcare and other similar settings.
For example, we sell bariatric chairs that feature hygiene-focused features such as ‘hygiene gaps’ which prevent the build up of dirt and bacteria between the seat pad and seat back. Other hygiene features include removable seat pads – for ease of cleaning, treated antibacterial vinyl upholstery, and drop arms – which make it easier for people with limited mobility to get in and out of the chair.
Do you sell bariatric chairs to private individuals?
Yes. Although our range of bariatric chairs is focused on buyers from large public organisations (e.g. hospitals, GP practices), we do sell bariatric chairs to private individuals. Just note our products are contract tested (rather than domestic, which are slightly different standards).
For example, some people who have had a prolonged stay in hospital will sometimes want the same type of chair at home. This is particularly true if they have got used to using a chair with mobility enhancing features like drop arms whilst they’ve been in hospital.
